An Expert Witness: Forensic Science on Trial

Thursday 14th January, 18:30 (doors open 18:15)

Bow Street Magistrate’s Court has born witness to pivotal cases in the evolution of forensic science, from the first bullet comparison in 1835 to the examination of mutilated tissue in the trial of Dr Crippen. However, whilst there may be some truth in the fictionalised and wonderful world of forensic science, the reality can be surprisingly different. In her most recent book, An Expert Witness, Professor Lady Sue Black puts forensic science itself on trial…

We are thrilled to welcome Baroness Black, the UK’s most experienced forensic anthropologist, into our historic space. She will explore the importance of forensic science across political, investigative, legal and humanitarian domains, illustrating why a robust forensic science system is critical to safe justice and to the prevention of miscarriages of justice.

Booking essential as places are limited.

Sue Black is one of the world’s leading forensic anthropologists. She was the lead for her profession in the war crimes investigations in Kosovo and was deployed to Iraq, Sierra Leone and Thailand. She is currently the President of St John’s College, Oxford. She is a cross-bench peer taking the title of Baroness Black of Strome. She is Chancellor of Anglia Ruskin University, a Lady of the most ancient and most noble order of the thistle and an honorary colonel of the 2nd signal squadron.

Timings: doors open at 18:15 and entry before then will be refused. The talk begins at 18:30 and lasts approximately 75 minutes, including a Q&A with the audience.
