MUSEUM LATE A Wilde Night: Celebrating the Life and Work of Oscar Wilde
A Wilde Night: Celebrating the Life and Work of Oscar Wilde
Sunday 29th November, 17:00 - 19:30
Bar open throughout the evening
‘To love oneself is the beginning of a lifelong romance’ wrote the late, great Oscar Wilde.
In this after-hours event, join us at the Museum as we contemplate the teachings, the triumphs, and the injustices faced by the much-beloved playwright and poet. At the centre of our upcoming exhibition, Echoes from the Dock, Oscar’s trials and tribulations give us a starting point for thinking about the long fight for LGBTQ+ rights. However, more than a collection of painful experiences, he was a playful, intellectual, genius of his time.
In the creative and thought-provoking spirit of Oscar, we have lined up an extra-special evening of talks, performance, and crafts.
Come along, grab a drink, and ‘be yourself, everyone else is taken’…
- Hear from Oscar-expert Anthony Delaney, who recently presented the History Hit documentary, A Very Victorian Scandal: The Trials of Oscar Wilde (not to mention his own History Hit podcast, After Dark!).
- Got ‘Wit and Wisdom’ to share? Visit our writing retreat to devise your own quotes, sayings, proverbs and mottos, in 'Wildean' style. Add them to the ‘Wall of Wit and Wisdom’ or put them in an envelope to be discovered later, the choice is yours…
- Didn’t get to see the Importance of Being Oscar? Don’t fret, it’s not too late to witness Alastair Whatley’s masterful performance as Oscar Wilde. Alastair will be rounding off the evening in the very dock where Oscar appeared for his hearing at Bow Street.
- We may have further additions to the schedule... so keep your 'Wits' about you!
Timings: doors open at 17:00, event ends at 19:30.
Conditions of entry: this event is recommended for anyone over the age of 18 years.
