YOU, THE JURY Ghosts and the Gallows: How the Law Treats the Supernatural
Thursday 22nd October, 18:30 (Doors open 18:15)
In a first-ever ‘You, The Jury’ event at the museum, put your minds together with fellow audience members to assess evidence and hand down a verdict on some of the strangest – and spookiest – cases in English legal history.
The English legal system is often considered a bastion of intellectual probity and rationality, with no time for supernatural matters. However, people have always believed in fantastical creatures, and their beliefs have led them to do strange and terrible things. When they appear before a judge, these beliefs are subject to the same harsh scrutiny as in any other legal case. As a result, the law has been confronted by everything from witches leaking war secrets, to ghosts solving their own murders. Even Bow Street has seen its fair share of spookiness.
Join our very own supernatural barrister Naomi Ryan and unpack some of the most famous incidents where the Fortean meets the forensic, the bizarre is examined by barristers and the strange is investigated by the state. Imagine yourself as a juror and decide whether you would convict someone on the evidence of a ghost, or hang someone for mistakenly murdering a suspected spectre. Does a belief in demons make you mad? At ‘You, The Jury’, you decide.
Booking essential as places are limited.
As well as being the museum’s most popular returning guest, Naomi Ryan is a criminal and public law barrister. When she isn’t advising legal luminaries, she delivers spirited (!) talks on macabre events in legal history. She is a regular feature at London’s Month of the Dead festival, and can often be found addressing museums and other legal and supernatural organisations on the spooky and scintillating topic of ghost law. Her favourite subjects include ghosts as witnesses, the prosecution of fraudulent mediums and the High Court’s treatment of demon mongooses called Gef.
Timings: doors open at 18:15 and entry before then will be refused. The event begins at 18:30 and lasts approximately 90 minutes, including engagement with the audience.
Conditions of entry: this event is recommended for anyone over the age of 12 years. Under 16s must be accompanied by an adult.
Tickets: this event is in person at Bow Street Museum. Due to the nature of this event it is not possible to attend via Livestream.
