CRIME WRITING WORKSHOP TWO - Building the crime story: suspects, clues & suspense

Have you always wanted to try your hand as a crime writer, but struggled to know where to begin? Perhaps you know how your mystery ends, but are struggling to pace your plot? This National Crime Reading Month, unlock your creative ‘cell’ in our historic crime-fighting setting by joining a series of three exclusive creative writing masterclasses led by award-winning crime authors.

Building the crime story: suspects, clues and suspense

You may already have the seed of an idea, but how do you turn it into a crime story? In this practical workshop, celebrated author of Lara’s Detective Agency series, Stella Oni, will guide anyone starting out in crime fiction who wants to begin shaping that idea into a workable story.

Using examples from classic and contemporary crime fiction, you will study the key building blocks of the genre, including:

  • The crime at the heart of your story
  • How the plot begins to take shape
  • The investigator’s or viewpoint character’s role
  • The suspects, and the clues, and building suspense on the page

By the end of the session, you should have a stronger sense of how your own idea will take form and how the main elements of a crime story work together. If you have started writing crime fiction and want to progress your story, this session is for you.

Price: £35 if booked individually. To maximise your experience, Bow Street Museum recommends attending all three workshops for the reduced price of £90. All tickets include a glass of prosecco or a soft drink alternative on arrival.

Date & Timings: 10th June at 18:00. Doors open at 17:45 and the workshop lasts approximately 2 hours.

Conditions of entry: this event is recommended for anyone over the age of 16 years.

Stella Oni is a UK-based crime fiction author, podcast host, and creative writing tutor. She wrote the award-nominated Deadly Sacrifice, an Audible crime and thriller pick, and the forthcoming Deadly Prophecy (2027). She also created the Lara’s Detective Agency series set in Lagos and is developing a new cosy mystery, The London House Mysteries, set in a luxury hotel.

She is a guest tutor at Cambridge PACE (Professional and Continuing Education) and hosts Talking Tech with Creatives, a show about how technology is reshaping storytelling and industries.
