A Life of Activism: Peter Tatchell in his own words

Sunday 2nd February 2025, 18:00 (Doors open at 17:30)

Until 1999, Britain had the largest number of anti-gay laws of any country in the world. Front-line activist Peter Tatchell will provide an inside account of his arrests and detention at Bow Street, including the mass turn-in to defy anti-LGBT+ laws.

He will also reveal his experiences in the Magistrates’ Court where in 2002 he sought an international arrest warrant for the former US Secretary of State, Henry Kissinger, on war crimes charges. Two years later calling for the same for the Zimbabwean dictator, Robert Mugabe, over his use of torture to crush dissent.

Peter has close ties with the Bow Street Police Station and will be hosting the talk in the Magistrate's Ballroom of the NoMad Hotel, formerly Court No.1 at Bow Street Magistrates' Court.

Peter Tatchell has campaigned for human rights and LGBT+ freedom since 1967.

He was the defeated Labour candidate in the 1983 Bermondsey by-election – the dirtiest, most violent and homophobic election in Britain for 100 years

He was also arrested when he protested at the football World Cup in Moscow in 2018 and again in Qatar in 2022.

Formerly a coordinator of the LGBT direct action group OutRage!, he is Director of the human rights campaign group, the Peter Tatchell Foundation.
